It will be almost a month since you wrote to me and you have possibly forgotten your state of mind (I doubt it though). You seem the same as always, and being you, hate every minute of it. Don’t! Learn to say “Fuck You” to the world once in a while. You have every right to. Just stop thinking, worrying, looking over your shoulder wondering, doubting, fearing, hurting, hoping for some easy way out, struggling, grasping, confusing, itchin, scratching, mumbling, bumbling, grumbling, humbling, stumbling, numbling, rumbling, gambling, tumbling, scumbling, scrambling, hitching, hatching, bitching, moaning, groaning, honing, boning, horse-shitting, hair-splitting, nit-picking, piss-trickling, nose sticking, ass-gouging, eyeball-poking, finger-pointing, alleyway-sneaking, long waiting, small stepping, evil-eyeing, back-scratching, searching, perching, besmirching, grinding, grinding, grinding away at yourself. Stop it and just DO!

From your description, and from what I know of your previous work and you [sic] ability; the work you are doing sounds very good “Drawing-clean-clear but crazy like machines, larger and bolder… real nonsense.” That sounds fine, wonderful – real nonsense. Do more. More nonsensical, more crazy, more machines, more breasts, penises, cunts, whatever – make them abound with nonsense. Try and tickle something inside you, your “weird humor.” You belong in the most secret part of you. Don’t worry about cool, make your own uncool. Make your own, your own world. If you fear, make it work for you – draw & paint your fear and anxiety. And stop worrying about big, deep things such as “to decide on a purpose and way of life, a consistant [sic] approach to even some impossible end or even an imagined end” You must practice being stupid, dumb, unthinking, empty. Then you will be able to DO!

I have much confidence in you and even though you are tormenting yourself, the work you do is very good. Try to do some BAD work – the worst you can think of and see what happens but mainly relax and let everything go to hell – you are not responsible for the world – you are only responsible for your work – so DO IT. And don’t think that your work has to conform to any preconceived form, idea or flavor. It can be anything you want it to be. But if life would be easier for you if you stopped working – then stop. Don’t punish yourself. However, I think that it is so deeply engrained in you that it would be easier to DO!

It seems I do understand your attitude somewhat, anyway, because I go through a similar process every so often. I have an “Agonizing Reappraisal” of my work and change everything as much as possible = and hate everything I’ve done, and try to do something entirely different and better. Maybe that kind of process is necessary to me, pushing me on and on. The feeling that I can do better than that shit I just did. Maybe you need your agony to accomplish what you do. And maybe it goads you on to do better. But it is very painful I know. It would be better if you had the confidence just to do the stuff and not even think about it. Can’t you leave the “world” and “ART” alone and also quit fondling your ego. I know that you (or anyone) can only work so much and the rest of the time you are left with your thoughts. But when you work or before your work you have to empty you [sic] mind and concentrate on what you are doing. After you do something it is done and that’s that. After a while you can see some are better than others but also you can see what direction you are going. I’m sure you know all that. You also must know that you don’t have to justify your work – not even to yourself. Well, you know I admire your work greatly and can’t understand why you are so bothered by it. But you can see the next ones and I can’t. You also must believe in your ability. I think you do. So try the most outrageous things you can – shock yourself. You have at your power the ability to do anything.

I would like to see your work and will have to be content to wait until Aug or Sept. I have seen photos of some of Tom’s new things at Lucy’s. They are impressive – especially the ones with the more rigorous form: the simpler ones. I guess he’ll send some more later on. Let me know how the shows are going and that kind of stuff.

My work had changed since you left and it is much better. I will be having a show May 4 -9 at the Daniels Gallery 17 E 64yh St (where Emmerich was), I wish you could be there. Much love to you both.

This morning, like most mornings as of late, I wake up from the weirdest dreams. What I remember is that I was in a swimming class, or on swim team, the way I was in sixth and seventh grade. We were all in line to dive in on one end and when we reached the other side we had to complete a kick-flip (I could never perfect this, thus ending my swimming career at 13). Anyway, after the lap and kick-flip, we each got a floatie but I got a noodle - naturally I thought, "this is such bullshit." They told me to put it under my knees and float. In my dream it was me and the strangers or the swim team/class, floating around a huge pool, staring at the sky.

All I remember after is noticing that we were right next to the ocean, or that the concrete of the walkway outside of pool met the sand. When I was floating I looked over and saw the tide coming in.

Anyway this all sounds very ominous and maybe I have watched Melancholia too many times but here is a my favorite art piece of all time regardless:

I guess I should say, as I am often asked, that this isn't a portfolio site. In fact I always sort of laugh when Caitlin tries to describe this blog but I feel like she does it best:

She maintains a blog that is a sort of an obscure diary of her daily thought processes.

If I had to explain I'd say this is just a giant visual to keep things/thoughts semi-organized. I quote a lot and try not to write too much because, well, I'm not a very good writer (but I do like writing.) But, I am interested in triptychs/triads and theories of complimentary associations, especially concerning banal visual stimuli. My degree is in photography so I think I naturally gravitate towards ephemera and how memory effects the sort of meaningless/meaningful tactile object. In terms what I've done in the past, namely my final portfolio for graduation, umm... it was a lot of layered meaning. I took photos of Omni hotels which have a very pointed position in my upbringing in south Texas but further, it was really dominated by how I felt at the time concerning the academic institution and being both an "other" and quite literally, "another" in the system. Currently I'm finishing my thesis, Observations of Ukrainian Mail Order Brides, for my honors/women studies minor and I just got a grant to complete an artist book in conjunction to that. As mentioned earlier for those who may not know, I will have my first solo show in June at the new experimental gallery run by my very close friend Caitlin McCollom. I will be showing new video work and ink drawings.

I came to photography after having hating it. The "Family Of Man" turned me off. The concerned photography turned me off. I wondered why anyone was involved with it for years. I was in a much superior mode of endeavour called A.R.T. ... It took an awakening that to realize that I was absolutely wrong. That, in a sense, photography had been hidden from me - which it hadn't been, I was hiding from it. Inherent in such names that I had never heard of before...any of Steiglitz's friends, was a well loved pleasure which um, it seemed worth while investigating. Worth while greedily having.

We soon learned to dodge chalk and protect our heads and stomachs whenever she approached us with a question. She hadn't yet punched anyone, but it seemed wise to protect ourselves against the inevitable.

Though we were forbidden to speak anything but french, the teacher would occasionally use us to practice any of her five fluent languages.

"I hate you," she said to me one afternoon. Her English was flawless. "I really, really hate you."

Call me sensitive, but I couldn't help but take it personally.

Reminiscences Of American Hotels

In Waiting For Occupancy, I am looking at the anxiety of the constructed, idealized environment of a four star hotel. By using photography as a means of describing the artifice of luxury, I am observing the space and taking note of the furnishings, décor and compositional elements of the room. In alluding to human absence through imprints, trash and accommodations, the photographs serve as a metaphor for the emptiness of the institutions as a commodity.

That was easy. It was simply money and fame. I was aware as anyone is, that in this world you can just be swept away. I’m aware of this just as much now. New York is a great place to be reminded of it. You arrive here, and Good Lord, you find out in ten seconds that nothing whatever matters, especially your own small life. So I knew I had to write a book that would be the best work in the world. It was that simple.

The woman is a young woman. She wants to make a living as a photographer, but at the moment she is temping at a company that publishes books about wetlands preservation. On her days off she takes pictures, and today she is sitting her car, across the street from a small grocery store called "The Go-Getters Market." The store is located in a very poor neighborhood of her city - the windows are barred and at night a roll-down steel door covers the storefront. The woman thus finds the name "Go-Getters" an interesting one, because it is clear that the customers of the market are anything but go-getters. They are drunkards and prostitutes and transients, and the young photographer thinks that if she can get the right picture of some of these people entering the store, she will make a picture that would be considered trenchant, or even poignant - either way the product of a sharp and observant eye. So she sits in her Toyota Camry, which her parents gave her because it was two years old and they wanted something new, and she waits for the right poor person to enter or leave the store. She has her window closed, but will open it when the right person appears, and then shoot that person under the sign that says "Go-Getters."
This, for the viewer of her photograph when it is displayed - first in a gallery then in the hallway of a collector's home, and later in a museum when she has her retrospective - will prove that she, the photographer, has a good eye for irony and hypocrisy, for the inequities and injustices of life, its perfect and unmitigated absurdity.

Tomorrow I am going on a backpacking and hiking trip for school at Lost Maples state park. I'll be gone for three days.
The teacher, who is this totally awesome woman who has dealt with juvenile youth and mindless college kids, says that this trip always tends to come exactly when you need it. Needless to say, I need it.

We're packing everything and anything possible so we have to pack light. I've decided to fold up a bunch of strathmore paper and draw. I'll also have a disposable camera. I want to make a zine about being in the mountains. Look for that later.

I bought snacks for the hike at the grocery store today:

little cheese things
2 apples
wheat thins
some almonds
some cashews
some dried cranberries
dried pineapple
peanuts
(...and that concludes my makeshift trail mix)

Hopefully I won't get eaten by a bear.
